From the sketchbook

back_sketch_4301

I was digging through an old box of art stuff and came across some of my sketchbooks. It was like a trip down memory lane. It has also inspired me to start being more diligent about carrying my skectchbook around with me. Expect to see more sketches in the future.

This study of the back muscle structure was done during a figure drawing class in college.

Icon Set

I recently had the opportunity to develop an icon set for use in both print and television. The icons needed to be built in a vector format, but the desired look was to feel watercolored. I expiremented with several techniques and ended up making my own vector watercolor brushes from scanned watercolor strokes. The icons are traced from my original ballpoint pen sketches. I am pleased with the results and wanted to share them.

Unk’s World-Famous Apple Butter

My wife’s uncle (Unk as they call him) makes some of the most amazing sauces, dressings, and egg noodles you will ever taste. He gives them out at family get togethers in plain canning jars with the contents labeled in marker on the lid. Not a bad system, but I wanted to suprise him with a label and logo of his own. It will be fun to see his face when we sneak these onto his creations.

Illustration for an Osteoporosis Article

Another illustration for a quarterly health magazine. It was for an article on osteoporosis awareness and prevention.

New Comic

This week I got to step out of my web designer shoes and do some illustration work for a quarterly health magazine. It was a nice break from my typical schedule.

Illustration Friday: Pretend

Have you ever wondered what a robot might pretend to be? Robo4000XL dreams of being a fluffy bunny, with the power of imagination anything is possible.

Illustration Friday: Memories

One of my fondest art memories relates to this piece. This drawing won me my first ever Scholastic Gold Key Award back in 1997. I was a sophomore in high school and this is when I realized that I could make a living as an artist. I began to take art much more seriously from this point on, and wouldn’t you know it, I make a living being an artist!

The project was to combine 3 random elements that we drew out of a hat. I drew a zebra, lightning bug, and wire cutters.

An interesting side note: This drawing is where I first experimented with ballpoint pens. You might notice it is often my drawing utensil of choice for many of my Illustration Friday entries.

Illustration Friday: Routine

I think that robots take routines to the extreme. Processing all of that binary code must get boring.

A Sharpie, a Lamborghini, & two weeks

I have been a car enthuasist since I got my first Matchbox car at the age of 2. My favorite car has always been the Lamborghini Countach LP 500S. As you can imagine when I came across the photos of a Lamborghini (although not a Countach) with a completely hand drawn paint job I was quite stunned. The level of detail is amazing and I would love to see the original sketches for the concept. Who knows, maybe it was free-handed on. It’s not like the car costs over $185,000.

The car was actually drawn on with Sharpie markers right on to the paint, then finished with clear coat for protection. It took about two weeks to complete according to the Flickr stream.

You can view more photos of this amazing piece of art here.
